This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to improvements of university campus.

accommodation: A room, group of rooms, or building in which someone may live or stay.; Example: It can be seen from the maps that the campus has been improved and extended, with much more student accommodation and facilities than previously.
block: noun; A large solid piece of hard material, especially rock, stone, or wood, typically with flat surfaces on each side.; Example: The previous single teaching block has been changed into a block only for arts subjects and there is a new building for the sciences to the north of the campus.
campus: noun; The grounds and buildings of a university or college.; Example: The two maps show the development of a university campus from 2010 to the present day.
destroy: verb; End the existence of (something) by damaging or attacking it.; Example: A previous accommodation block south of the lake has been destroyed and replaced by a new building for students, which includes shops and offices.
extend: Cause to cover a wider area; make larger.; Example: It can be seen from the maps that the campus has been improved and extended, with much more student accommodation and facilities than previously.
increase: verb; Become or make greater in size, amount, or degree.; Example: Firstly, the number of student accommodation buildings has been increased in number and size.
lawn: verb; An area of short, regularly mown grass in the garden of a house or park.; Example: The lawn and outside seating area which were next to the lake have been removed.
previously: adverb; At a previous or earlier time; before.; Example: It can be seen from the maps that the campus has been improved and extended, with much more student accommodation and facilities than previously.
remain: verb; Continue to exist, especially after other similar people or things have ceased to do so.; Example: The lake, however, has remained and is still the central point of the campus.
remove: verb; Take (something) away or off from the position occupied.; Example: The lawn and outside seating area which were next to the lake have been removed.
